Work-Oriented Training Pathway (WOTP) at James Lyng

Starting September 2025, James Lyng will offer the Work-Oriented Training Pathway (WOTP), a one-year program designed for students aged 15 and older who have completed elementary-level studies in language and math but have not earned credits at the Secondary Cycle One level.

WOTP helps students gain practical skills and explore different trades. Throughout the school year, students will be in the classroom working on core subjects and preparation for their work placements.  Students will take courses in English, French, Mathematics, Arts option or Physical Education option and Job Search. They learn valuable life skills in areas like health and well-being, citizenship, entrepreneurship, and environmental awareness.

Students will also participate in a 375 hour placement in the work force in a job setting based on their skills and interests. Work placements such as in retail stores, restaurants, community centers, bike repair workshops, automotives centers and more will be sought out with proximity to the school and students interests in mind.

Graduates earn an official certificate from the Ministère de l’Éducation that recognizes their employability skills. After the program, students can continue their studies in general education at James Lyng (Secondary 3) or adult education, start vocational training, take another year of WOTP at James Lyng or graduate and enter the job market with confidence and experience.

📘 About the Program

This program is designed to give students experience in real work environments. Each student attends work placement at a local business. Students work alongside an employee for support and guidance to perform tasks in a safe environment. During school hours, they will learn the primary academic subjects: English, math and French. They will also be learning about the job market and how to succeed once they leave high school. Skills such as time management, emotional regulations, work behaviours and overall employability will be taught.

🧭 Program Overview

The teacher meets with the employer to give details of the student and their expectations. Employers provide a “workplace supervisor” who fills out the student evaluation form twice to measure students’ progress and provide feedback. Once the student begins, school professionals will perform regular visits for guidance and support to the student and workplace supervisor. Students meet with school professionals outside of work hours for extra training, problem solving and feedback throughout their experience.

🎓 Student Will

Work as a stagiaire (no wages or salary) and follows the school calendar. Be covered by English Montreal School Board Insurance and CSST. Work up to 2 days per week when the teacher believes they are ready. Work within school hours depending on the job.
