Guidance Counselling

The guidance department is committed to helping our students in their academic, social or emotional well-being. Our guidance counsellor assists students in making choices about their future by informing students about CEGEP, vocational, professional programs and career possibilities.  She plays a key role in crisis intervention and support students undergoing a difficult or traumatic period. A part-time substance abuse counsellor works collaboratively with the guidance counsellor to promote healthy lifestyles and prevention. Visit the JLHS Counselling Services page for more information.

Nutritional Education

Dietitians travel from school to school visiting classrooms and cafeterias to talk to students about eating nutritious foods and being healthy. The aim is to encourage healthy lifestyles through good nutrition and physical activity and to sensitize students to the social influences on their perception of health and well-being. Consult the EMSB Nutrition & Food Services page.

Social, Health and Community Support

Services that support JLHS range from access to a school nurse (1 day per week), mentors and social programming by the Centres Intégrés Universitaires de Santé et de Services Sociaux (CIUSSS) aimed at promotion of healthy living. A community police officer is available at various times during the year to build positive relationships with students in the school.

Special Needs Support

Students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), are considered students with special needs. Special education resource teachers assist students that require additional support in learning, social and emotional challenges. Child care workers support students in organization and reinforcing positive study skills as well as supporting student on an individual basis as needed. A behaviour technician is available for on-site intervention and promotion of positive relationships with students. Please consult the EMSB Special Needs page for more information.

Student-Parent Animator

Our student-parent animator is a figure who is unique to our school community. This position was created in order to respond to the social and emotional well-being of students. She maintains regular communication with parents and fosters close relationships with of all James Lyng’s families, and is instrumental in ensuring that students attend school. It is this type of commitment, on behalf of members of our staff, which has created within our small school a family-like atmosphere where all are welcome.
